Top 5 Bollywood Movies of 2013 Based on Box Office Receipts

For Bollywood movies, 2013 was a great year, with some wonderful movies coming out. Though there were certainly a lot of movies that made headlines this year, some of them went above and beyond, making a name for themselves in Bollywood history by being named one of the top Bollywood movies of 2013. When you look at box office receipts up to the time of this writing and what people spent at theatres, the following were the top 5:

#5 – “Race 2”

Though the 2013 film, “Race 2” was not a movie that critics loved, moviegoers seemed to like it enough to spend an estimated 96.34 crore on the film. The film, released in January, stared Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor and John Abraham. “Race 2” is the continuing story of “Race”, the 208 film. “Race 2” follows Ranvir Singh as he attempts to avenge the death of his lover in Turkey. This crime and action movie has been described as a “thriller” and is filled with twists and turns that viewers love.

#4 – “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”

As one of the top movies of the year, “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” certainly didn’t disappoint at the box office, either. The film made an estimated 108.87 crore and critics and audiences both loved this film, based on the true story of Olympian and world champion runner, Milkha Singh. The film stars Farhan Akhtar as the title character and follows him through the toughest parts of his life including the massacre of his family and homelessness.

#3 – “Krrish 3”

Action and sci-fi film, “Krrish 3” certainly made its place in Bollywood history this year by making 171.25 crore at the Indian box office during its opening and is expected to take over the number one spot quickly. “Krrish 3” is the continuing story of superhero “Krrish” and his adventures, this time attempting to save the world from a group of mutants led by the evil “Kaal”. The film starred Hrithik Roshan, as “Krrish” and Vivek Oberoi as “Kaal”. Though reviews for this film were OK, being the first real superhero franchise in India, “Krrish” is certainly here to stay.

#2 – “Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani”

The number two film of 2013, based on box office reports, was the drama/romance movie, “Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani”. The film pulled in approximately 185.83 crore, and was one of those movies that had something for everyone. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor as “Bunny” and Deepika Padukone as “Naina”, two friends who reunite at two specific crossroads in their lives. Both critics and audiences loved this film, directed by Ayan Mukherjee.

#1 – “Chennai Express”

No other film this year could even come close to touching the blockbuster movie, “Chennai Express”. This film brought in 208.69 crore throughout India in 2013 and was the widest released of any Bollywood movie. Even in the US, the film brought in over $5 million USD, or about 31.425 crore. This film, starring Shah Rukh Khan, is about a man who sets out on a journey to fulfill the last wish of his grandfather. Along the way, he meets some bumps in the road that may halt his progress. This film is a comedy, a romance and even has some action, meaning there is no doubt why Indian audiences fell in love with “Chennai Express” in 2013.
